Team USA dominated the total medal count while tying with China for the most gold medals won at the 2024 Paris Olympics following the conclusion of all events on Sunday (August 11).
The United States won a total of 126 medals including 40 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze. China had the second-most total medals at 91 with 40 gold, 27 silver and 24 bronze.
The two countries went back-and-forth at the top of the gold medal tally during the final week of competition with the United States trailing China, 39-38, entering Sunday. Li Wenwen won the women's 81kg weightlifting final to provide China with its 40th and final medal.
American cyclist Jennifer Valente won gold in the women's omnium before the U.S. Women's Basketball Team defeated host nation France in their gold medal final on Sunday. The U.S. won five total medals on Sunday, which included wrestler Kennedy Blades taking silver in women's 76kg freestyle, as well as the Americans getting silver in women's team volleyball and bronze in men's water polo.
The final medal total reflected the International Gymnastics Federation's decision to modify the women's gymnastics floor final results, therefore taking the bronze medal away from American Jordan Chiles. The federation modified that Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu finished in third-place in the women's gymnastics floor final following the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to amend the final ranking.
The court ruled that the appeal made by U.S. coach Cecile Landi resulting in Chiles having an additional .1 added to her score came outside the one-minute window allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG). The CAS said the initial finishing order of Brazil's Rebeca Andrade, Biles and Barbosu should be restored, while Chiles would finish fifth behind Barbosu's Romanian teammate Sabrina Maneca-Voinea.
American athletes have won a total of 2,638 medals, including 1,065 gold medals and placed 19 times out of 29 Summer Olympics.
